ਆਛੇ ਅਰੁਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਤਨ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

aachhe arun basatr tan dhaare ||

ਦੁਹੂੰ ਹਾਥ ਨਰਿਏਰ ਉਛਾਰੇ ॥

dhuhoo(n) haath narier uchhaare ||

On the route, the Raja was to come back, she had erected a death-pyre,

ਹੁਤੋ ਦਰਬ ਸੋ ਸਕਲ ਲੁਟਾਯੋ ॥

huto dharab so sakal luTaayo ||

ਆਪੁ ਸਤੀ ਕੌ ਭੇਖ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥੧੪॥

aap satee kau bhekh banaayo ||14||

And she had gone there with new red clothes on to become a Sati(14)

ਜਿਹ ਮਾਰਗ ਰਾਜ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਆਯੋ ॥

jeh maarag raaj havai aayo ||

ਤਹੀ ਆਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਚਿਤਹਿ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥

tahee aan tiray chiteh banaayo ||

(to immolate herself in case Raja was dead).

ਤਬ ਲੌ ਰਾਇ ਆਇ ਹੀ ਗਯੋ ॥

tab lau rai aai hee gayo ||

ਹੇਰਤ ਤਵਨ ਸਤੀ ਕੌ ਭਯੋ ॥੧੫॥

herat tavan satee kau bhayo ||15||

When Raja passed that way, he observed the Sati.(15)

ਰਾਇ ਬਿਹਸਿ ਤਿਹ ਓਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

rai bihas teh or nihaariyo ||

ਨਿਕਟ ਬੋਲਿ ਭ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

nikaT bol bhirat bachan uchaariyo ||

ਜਾ ਕੋ ਸੋਧ ਲੇਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਜਾਈ ॥

jaa ko sodh leh tum jaiee ||

ਕੌਨ ਸਤੀ ਹ੍ਵੈਬੈ ਕਹ ਆਈ ॥੧੬॥

kauan satee havaibai keh aaiee ||16||

ਸੁਨਤ ਰਾਵ ਕੋ ਦੂਤ ਬਚ ਤਹਾ ਪਹੂਚ੍ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥

sunat raav ko dhoot bach tahaa pahoochayo jai ||

On Raja’s order his emissary approached the place,

ਸਕਲ ਸਤੀ ਕੋ ਭੇਦ ਲੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪਤਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੧੭॥

sakal satee ko bhedh lai nirap pat kahiyo sunai ||17||

And brought the news of the secret desire of the Sati.(17)

Chaupaee

ਯੌ ਸੁਨ ਬਚਨ ਰੀਝਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥

yau sun bachan reejh nirap rahiyo ||

ਧੰਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਤਿਹ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥

dha(n)n dha(n)n mukh te teh kahiyo ||

Hearing this Raja was delighted and praised her vehemently,

ਹਮ ਯਾ ਸੋ ਕਛੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਗੀ ॥

ham yaa so kachh preet na jaagee ||

ਮੇਰੇ ਹੇਤ ਦੇਨ ਜਿਯ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੧੮॥

mere het dhen jiy laagee ||18||

‘I did not love her at all but she was going to sacrifice herself for me.(18)

ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਮੋ ਕੋ ਮੈ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਚੀਨੋ ॥

dhirag mo ko mai bhedh na cheeno ||

ਅਬ ਲੌ ਬ੍ਯਾਹ ਨ ਯਾ ਸੋ ਕੀਨੋ ॥

ab lau bayaeh na yaa so keeno ||

‘I should be ashamed of myselfthat I did not acquiesce the secret.

ਜਿਨ ਨਾਰਿਨ ਸੌ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ॥

jin naarin sau preet lagaiee ||

ਸੋ ਇਹ ਸਮੈ ਕਾਮ ਨਹਿ ਆਈ ॥੧੯॥

so ieh samai kaam neh aaiee ||19||

‘Not even from the women I loved, came to wish me success.(19)

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੈ ਇਹ ਅਬੈ ਬਿਯਾਹੂੰ ॥

taa te mai ieh abai biyaahoo(n) ||

ਤਨ ਲਗਿ ਯਾ ਸੋ ਨੇਹ ਨਿਬਾਹੂੰ ॥

tan lag yaa so neh nibaahoo(n) ||

‘Now, I will marry her immediately and spend whole life wit her.

ਬਰਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਤੇ ਤਾਹਿ ਉਬਾਰੋ ॥

barat agan te taeh ubaaro ||

ਮੋ ਸੋ ਜਰੀ ਨ ਤਨ ਕੋ ਜਾਰੋ ॥੨੦॥

mo so jaree na tan ko jaaro ||20||

‘I will save her from immolating in the fire, rather she is already burnt in fire of love for me.’(20)

ਚਿਤਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਜੋ ਸਤੀ ਜਗਾਈ ॥

chitaa agan jo satee jagaiee ||

ਬਿਰਹਾਨਲ ਸੋਈ ਠਹਿਰਾਈ ॥

birahaanal soiee Thahiraiee ||

The pyre the Sati had built, he thought it to be the pyre of separation.

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤੀਰ ਭਾਵਰੈ ਦੀਨੀ ॥

taa ke teer bhaavarai dheenee ||

ਰਾਕ ਹੁਤੀ ਰਾਨੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੀਨੀ ॥੨੧॥

raak hutee raanee bidh keenee ||21||

He circumambulated three times through all the four corners and honoured her as his Rani.(21)

ਏਹੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਯੋ ॥

ehee charitr nirapat ko paayo ||

ਸਭ ਰਾਨਿਨ ਚਿਤ ਤੇ ਬਿਸਰਾਯੋ ॥

sabh raanin chit te bisaraayo ||

After observing this incident, he relinquished all the other Ranis. And

ਅਪਨੀ ਆਗ੍ਯਾ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੋ ॥

apanee aagayaa ke bas keeno ||

ਜਾਨੁਕ ਦਾਸ ਮੋਲ ਕੋ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੨੨॥

jaanuk dhaas mol ko leeno ||22||

new Rani took control over Raja as if she had bought him.(22)

ਤਾ ਦਿਨ ਤੈ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਘਨੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਢੀ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥

taa dhin tai taa so ghanee preet baddee sukh pai ||

From that day on, Raja’s love was enhanced towards her.

ਸਭ ਰਨਿਯਨ ਕੋ ਰਾਵ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਤੇ ਦਿਯੋ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੨੩॥

sabh raniyan ko raav ke chit te dhiyo bhulai ||23||

Raja eradicated from his heart the love for all other Ranis.(23)(1)

ਦੁਰਜਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਵ ਇਕ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

dhurajan si(n)gh raav ik bhaaree ||

ਦਿਸਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਜਿਹ ਕਰਤ ਜੁਹਾਰੀ ॥

dhisaa chaar jeh karat juhaaree ||

Durjan Singh was a great king; he was revered in all four directions.

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਹੇਰਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥

taa ko roop her bal jaaveh ||

ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਅਧਿਕ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥

prajaa adhik man mai sukh paaveh ||1||

His handsomeness was admired by every body and his subject was very blissful.(1)

ਤਾਹਿ ਦੇਸ ਆਵਤ ਜੁ ਜਨ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥

taeh dhes aavat ju jan taa ko roop nihaar ||

Who-so-ever came to his country, watched his magnanimity,

ਹ੍ਵੈ ਚੇਰੇ ਤਿਹ ਪੁਰ ਬਸੈ ਸਭ ਧਨ ਧਾਮ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

havai chere teh pur basai sabh dhan dhaam bisaar ||2||

He would forget all his own home and wealth, and remain as his (the raja’s) menial.(2)
