rainair meh sabh kichh hai karamee palai pai ||

All things are in the world-ocean, but they are obtained only by the karma of good actions.

mahalaa teejaa ||

Third Mehla:

sahaje satigur na sevio vich haumai janam binaas ||

One who doesn't intuitively serves the True Guru, loses his life in egotism.

rasanaa har ras na chakhio kamal na hoio paragaas ||

His tongue does not taste the sublime essence of the Lord, and his heart-lotus does not blossom forth.

bikh khaadhee manmukh muaa maiaa moh vinaas ||

The self-willed manmukh eats poison and dies; he is ruined by love and attachment to Maya.

eikas har ke naam vin dhirag jeevan dhirag vaas ||

Without the Name of the One Lord, his life is cursed, and his home is cursed as well.

jaa aape nadhar kare prabh sachaa taa hovai dhaasan dhaas ||

When God Himself bestows His Glance of Grace, then one becomes the slave of His slaves.

taa anadhin sevaa kare satiguroo kee kabeh na chhoddai paas ||

And then, night and day, he serves the True Guru, and never leaves His side.

jiau jal meh kamal alipato varatai tiau viche gireh udhaas ||

As the lotus flower floats unaffected in the water, so does he remain detached in his own household.

jan naanak kare karaiaa sabh ko jiau bhaavai tiv har gunataas ||2||

O servant Nanak, the Lord acts, and inspires everyone to act, according to the Pleasure of His Will. He is the treasure of virtue. ||2||

pauRee ||

Pauree:

chhateeh jug gubaar saa aape ganat keenee ||

For thirty-six ages, there was utter darkness. Then, the Lord revealed Himself.

aape sirasaT sabh saajeean aap mat dheenee ||

He Himself created the entire universe. He Himself blessed it with understanding.

simirat saasat saajian paap pu(n)n ganat ganeenee ||

He created the Simritees and the Shaastras; He calculates the accounts of virtue and vice.

jis bujhaae so bujhasee sachai sabadh pateenee ||

He alone understands, whom the Lord inspires to understand and to be pleased with the True Word of the Shabad.

sabh aape aap varatadhaa aape bakhas milaiee ||7||

He Himself is all-pervading; He Himself forgives, and unites with Himself. ||7||

End of the Hukamnama

Past seven days

What is a Hukamnama?

Each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, after Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened with prayer, the Granthi reads the shabad at the top of the left page the Guru opens to. That shabad is the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day. The word joins hukam, an order, and nama, a letter.

It is taken once and shared everywhere, so a Sikh in Amritsar and one in California read the same shabad that day. Many Sikhs read it after their morning Nitnem, or listen to it on the way to work, and carry a line of it through the day.

This page shows the day's Hukamnama in Gurmukhi with a transliteration and English translation, and the recording of it when one is available. The Simran app brings it to your phone each morning, with the lock screen widget showing the first line where you will see it first.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the Hukamnama taken?

It is taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib early in the morning, India time, and appears here soon after. India is twelve and a half hours ahead of California and five and a half hours ahead of London, so by the clock in North America the new Hukamnama usually arrives the evening before.

Why does the date look a day ahead of mine?

The date is the day in Amritsar, where the Hukamnama is taken. When it is Tuesday morning there it is still Monday evening in most of the Americas.

Can I read an earlier Hukamnama?

The past seven days are listed above. Each opens that day's full shabad in Gurmukhi with transliteration and English.

How do I get the Hukamnama on my lock screen?

The Simran app has a Daily Hukamnama widget for the lock screen on iPhone and Android. Add it once and the day's shabad is there each morning. The lock screen widget page walks through the setup.
