vaddaha(n)s mahalaa pehilaa ghar doojaa ||

Wadahans, First Mehla, Second House:

moree run jhun laiaa bhaine saavan aaiaa ||

The peacocks are singing so sweetly, O sister; the rainy season of Saawan has come.

tere mu(n)dh kaTaare jevaddaa tin lobhee lobh lubhaiaa ||

Your beauteous eyes are like a string of charms, fascinating and enticing the soul-bride.

tere dharasan viTahu kha(n)neeaai va(n)n(j)aa tere naam viTahu kurabaano ||

I would cut myself into pieces for the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; I am a sacrifice to Your Name.

jaa too taa mai maan keeaa hai tudh bin kehaa meraa maano ||

I take pride in You; without You, what could I be proud of?

chooRaa bha(n)n pala(n)gh siau mu(n)dhe san baahee san baahaa ||

So smash your bracelets along with your bed, O soul-bride, and break your arms, along with the arms of your couch.

ete ves karedhe'ee mu(n)dhe sahu raato avaraahaa ||

In spite of all the decorations which you have made, O soul-bride, your Husband Lord is enjoying someone else.

You don't have the bracelets of gold, nor the good crystal jewelry; you haven't dealt with the true jeweller.

Those arms, which do not embrace the neck of the Husband Lord, burn in anguish.

sabh saheeaa sahu raavan gieeaa hau dhaadhee kai dhar jaavaa ||

All my companions have gone to enjoy their Husband Lord; which door should I, the wretched one, go to?

a(n)maalee hau kharee suchajee tai seh ek na bhaavaa ||

O friend, I may look very attractive, but I am not pleasing to my Husband Lord at all.

maaTh gu(n)dhaae(n)ee paTeeaa bhareeaai maag sa(n)dhoore ||

I have woven my hair into lovely braids, and saturated their partings with vermillion;

but when I go before Him, I am not accepted, and I die, suffering in anguish.

mai rova(n)dhee sabh jag runaa ru(n)naRe vanahu pa(n)kheroo ||

I weep; the whole world weeps; even the birds of the forest weep with me.

eik na runaa mere tan kaa birahaa jin hau pirahu vichhoRee ||

The only thing which doesn't weep is my body's sense of separateness, which has separated me from my Lord.

supanai aaiaa bhee giaa mai jal bhariaa roi ||

In a dream, He came, and went away again; I cried so many tears.

I can't come to You, O my Beloved, and I can't send anyone to You.

aau sabhaagee needhaRe'e mat sahu dhekhaa soi ||

Come to me, O blessed sleep - perhaps I will see my Husband Lord again.

tai saahib kee baat j aakhai kahu naanak kiaa dheejai ||

One who brings me a message from my Lord and Master - says Nanak, what shall I give to Him?

sees vadde kar baisan dheejai vin sir sev kareejai ||

Cutting off my head, I give it to Him to sit upon; without my head, I shall still serve Him.

kiau na mareejai jeeaRaa na dheejai jaa sahu bhiaa viddaanaa ||1||3||

Why haven't I died? Why hasn't my life just ended? My Husband Lord has become a stranger to me. ||1||3||

End of the Hukamnama

Past seven days

What is a Hukamnama?

Each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, after Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened with prayer, the Granthi reads the shabad at the top of the left page the Guru opens to. That shabad is the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day. The word joins hukam, an order, and nama, a letter.

It is taken once and shared everywhere, so a Sikh in Amritsar and one in California read the same shabad that day. Many Sikhs read it after their morning Nitnem, or listen to it on the way to work, and carry a line of it through the day.

This page shows the day's Hukamnama in Gurmukhi with a transliteration and English translation, and the recording of it when one is available. The Simran app brings it to your phone each morning, with the lock screen widget showing the first line where you will see it first.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the Hukamnama taken?

It is taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib early in the morning, India time, and appears here soon after. India is twelve and a half hours ahead of California and five and a half hours ahead of London, so by the clock in North America the new Hukamnama usually arrives the evening before.

Why does the date look a day ahead of mine?

The date is the day in Amritsar, where the Hukamnama is taken. When it is Tuesday morning there it is still Monday evening in most of the Americas.

Can I read an earlier Hukamnama?

The past seven days are listed above. Each opens that day's full shabad in Gurmukhi with transliteration and English.

How do I get the Hukamnama on my lock screen?

The Simran app has a Daily Hukamnama widget for the lock screen on iPhone and Android. Add it once and the day's shabad is there each morning. The lock screen widget page walks through the setup.
