salok mahalaa teejaa ||

Shalok, Third Mehla:

satigur kee sevaa safal hai je ko kare chit lai ||

Service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding, if one performs it with his mind focused on it.

man chi(n)dhiaa fal paavanaa haumai vichahu jai ||

The fruits of the mind's desires are obtained, and egotism departs from within.

ba(n)dhan toRai mukat hoi sache rahai samai ||

His bonds are broken, and he is liberated; he remains absorbed in the True Lord.

eis jag meh naam alabh hai gurmukh vasai man aai ||

It is so difficult to obtain the Naam in this world; it comes to dwell in the mind of the Gurmukh.

naanak jo gur seveh aapanaa hau tin balihaarai jaau ||1||

O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to one who serves his True Guru. ||1||

mahalaa teejaa ||

Third Mehla:

manmukh ma(n)n ajit hai dhoojai lagai jai ||

The mind of the self-willed manmukh is so very stubborn; it is stuck in the love of duality.

tis no sukh supanai nahee dhukhe dhukh vihai ||

He does not find peace, even in dreams; he passes his life in misery and suffering.

ghar ghar paR paR pa(n)ddit thake sidh samaadh lagai ||

The Pandits have grown weary of going door to door, reading and reciting their scriptures; the Siddhas have gone into their trances of Samaadhi.

eih man vas na aaviee thake karam kamai ||

This mind cannot be controlled; they are tired of performing religious rituals.

bhekhadhaaree bhekh kar thake aThisaTh teerath nai ||

The impersonators have grown weary of wearing false costumes, and bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines.

man kee saar na jaananee haumai bharam bhulai ||

They do not know the state of their own minds; they are deluded by doubt and egotism.

gur parasaadhee bhau piaa vaddabhaag vasiaa man aai ||

By Guru's Grace, the Fear of God is obtained; by great good fortune, the Lord comes to abide in the mind.

bhai piaai man vas hoaa haumai sabadh jalai ||

When the Fear of God comes, the mind is restrained, and through the Word of the Shabad, the ego is burnt away.

sach rate se niramale jotee jot milai ||

Those who are imbued with Truth are immaculate; their light merges in the Light.

satigur miliaai naau paiaa naanak sukh samai ||2||

Meeting the True Guru, one obtains the Name; O Nanak, he is absorbed in peace. ||2||

pauRee ||

Pauree:

eh bhoopat raane ra(n)g dhin chaar suhaavanaa ||

The pleasures of kings and emperors are pleasing, but they last for only a few days.

eh maiaa ra(n)g kasu(n)bh khin meh leh jaavanaa ||

These pleasures of Maya are like the color of the safflower, which wears off in a moment.

chaladhiaa naal na chalai sir paap lai jaavanaa ||

They do not go with him when he departs; instead, he carries the load of sins upon his head.

jaa(n) pakaR chalaiaa kaal taa(n) kharaa ddaraavanaa ||

When death seizes him, and marches him away, then he looks absolutely hideous.

oh velaa hath na aavai fir pachhutaavanaa ||6||

That lost opportunity will not come into his hands again, and in the end, he regrets and repents. ||6||

End of the Hukamnama

Past seven days

What is a Hukamnama?

Each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, after Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened with prayer, the Granthi reads the shabad at the top of the left page the Guru opens to. That shabad is the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day. The word joins hukam, an order, and nama, a letter.

It is taken once and shared everywhere, so a Sikh in Amritsar and one in California read the same shabad that day. Many Sikhs read it after their morning Nitnem, or listen to it on the way to work, and carry a line of it through the day.

This page shows the day's Hukamnama in Gurmukhi with a transliteration and English translation, and the recording of it when one is available. The Simran app brings it to your phone each morning, with the lock screen widget showing the first line where you will see it first.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the Hukamnama taken?

It is taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib early in the morning, India time, and appears here soon after. India is twelve and a half hours ahead of California and five and a half hours ahead of London, so by the clock in North America the new Hukamnama usually arrives the evening before.

Why does the date look a day ahead of mine?

The date is the day in Amritsar, where the Hukamnama is taken. When it is Tuesday morning there it is still Monday evening in most of the Americas.

Can I read an earlier Hukamnama?

The past seven days are listed above. Each opens that day's full shabad in Gurmukhi with transliteration and English.

How do I get the Hukamnama on my lock screen?

The Simran app has a Daily Hukamnama widget for the lock screen on iPhone and Android. Add it once and the day's shabad is there each morning. The lock screen widget page walks through the setup.
