Raag Wadahans, First Mehla, Fifth House, Alaahanees ~ Songs Of Mourning:
ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
dha(n)n sira(n)dhaa sachaa paatisaahu jin jag dha(n)dhai laiaa ||
Blessed is the Creator, the True King, who has linked the whole world to its tasks.
muhalat punee paiee bharee jaaneeaRaa ghat chalaiaa ||
When one's time is up, and the measure is full, this dear soul is caught, and driven off.
jaanee ghat chalaiaa likhiaa aaiaa ru(n)ne veer sabaae ||
This dear soul is driven off, when the pre-ordained Order is received, and all the relatives cry out in mourning.
kaa(n)iaa ha(n)s theeaa vechhoRaa jaa(n) dhin pu(n)ne meree maae ||
The body and the swan-soul are separated, when one's days are past and done, O my mother.
jehaa likhiaa tehaa paiaa jehaa purab kamaiaa ||
As is one's pre-ordained Destiny, so does one receive, according to one's past actions.
dha(n)n sira(n)dhaa sachaa paatisaahu jin jag dha(n)dhai laiaa ||1||
Blessed is the Creator, the True King, who has linked the whole world to its tasks. ||1||
saahib simarahu mere bhaieeho sabhanaa eh piaanaa ||
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord and Master, O my Siblings of Destiny; everyone has to pass this way.
ethai dha(n)dhaa kooRaa chaar dhihaa aagai sarapar jaanaa ||
These false entanglements last for only a few days; then, one must surely move on to the world hereafter.
aagai sarapar jaanaa jiau mihamaanaa kaahe gaarab keejai ||
He must surely move on to the world hereafter, like a guest; so why does he indulge in ego?
jit seviaai dharageh sukh paieeaai naam tisai kaa leejai ||
Chant the Name of the Lord; serving Him, you shall obtain peace in His Court.
aagai hukam na chalai moole sir sir kiaa vihaanaa ||
In the world hereafter, no one's commands will be obeyed. According to their actions, each and every person proceeds.
saahib simarih mere bhaieeho sabhanaa eh piaanaa ||2||
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord and Master, O my Siblings of Destiny; everyone has to pass this way. ||2||
jo tis bhaavai sa(n)mrath so theeaai heelaRaa eh sa(n)saaro ||
Whatever pleases the Almighty Lord, that alone comes to pass; this world is an opportunity to please Him.
jal thal maheeal rav rahiaa saachaRaa sirajanahaaro ||
The True Creator Lord is pervading and permeating the water, the land and the air.
saachaa sirajanahaaro alakh apaaro taa kaa a(n)t na paiaa ||
The True Creator Lord is invisible and infinite; His limits cannot be found.
aaiaa tin kaa safal bhiaa hai ik man jinee dhiaaiaa ||
Fruitful is the coming of those, who meditate single-mindedly on Him.
ddaahe ddaeh usaare aape hukam savaaranahaaro ||
He destroys, and having destroyed, He creates; by His Order, He adorns us.
jo tis bhaavai sa(n)mrath so theeaai heelaRaa eh sa(n)saaro ||3||
Whatever pleases the Almighty Lord, that alone comes to pass; this world is an opportunity to please Him. ||3||
naanak ru(n)naa baabaa jaaneeaai je rovai lai piaaro ||
Nanak: he alone truly weeps, O Baba, who weeps in the Lord's Love.
vaaleve kaaran baabaa roieeaai rovan sagal bikaaro ||
One who weeps for the sake of worldly objects, O Baba, weeps totally in vain.
rovan sagal bikaaro gaafal sa(n)saaro maiaa kaaran rovai ||
This weeping is all in vain; the world forgets the Lord, and weeps for the sake of Maya.
cha(n)gaa ma(n)dhaa kichh soojhai naahee ih tan evai khovai ||
He does not distinguish between good and evil, and wastes away this life in vain.
aaithai aaiaa sabh ko jaasee kooR karahu aha(n)kaaro ||
Everyone who comes here, shall have to leave; to act in ego is false.
naanak ru(n)naa baabaa jaaneeaai je rovai lai piaaro ||4||1||

End of the Hukamnama
Past seven days
What is a Hukamnama?
Each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, after Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened with prayer, the Granthi reads the shabad at the top of the left page the Guru opens to. That shabad is the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day. The word joins hukam, an order, and nama, a letter.
It is taken once and shared everywhere, so a Sikh in Amritsar and one in California read the same shabad that day. Many Sikhs read it after their morning Nitnem, or listen to it on the way to work, and carry a line of it through the day.
This page shows the day's Hukamnama in Gurmukhi with a transliteration and English translation, and the recording of it when one is available. The Simran app brings it to your phone each morning, with the lock screen widget showing the first line where you will see it first.
Frequently asked questions
What time is the Hukamnama taken?
It is taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib early in the morning, India time, and appears here soon after. India is twelve and a half hours ahead of California and five and a half hours ahead of London, so by the clock in North America the new Hukamnama usually arrives the evening before.
Why does the date look a day ahead of mine?
The date is the day in Amritsar, where the Hukamnama is taken. When it is Tuesday morning there it is still Monday evening in most of the Americas.
Can I read an earlier Hukamnama?
The past seven days are listed above. Each opens that day's full shabad in Gurmukhi with transliteration and English.
How do I get the Hukamnama on my lock screen?
The Simran app has a Daily Hukamnama widget for the lock screen on iPhone and Android. Add it once and the day's shabad is there each morning. The lock screen widget page walks through the setup.
