ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੋਊ ਬਿਬਰਜਿਤ ਤਜਹੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥

ausatat ni(n)dhaa dhouoo bibarajit tajahu maan abhimaanaa ||

Those who ignore both praise and slander, who reject egotistical pride and conceit,

ਲੋਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਤੇ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਭਗਵਾਨਾ ॥੧॥

lohaa ka(n)chan sam kar jaaneh te moorat bhagavaanaa ||1||

who look alike upon iron and gold - they are the very image of the Lord God. ||1||

ਤੇਰਾ ਜਨੁ ਏਕੁ ਆਧੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

teraa jan ek aadh koiee ||

Hardly anyone is a humble servant of Yours, O Lord.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਿਬਰਜਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਪਦੁ ਚੀਨੑੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kaam karodh lobh moh bibarajit har padh cheen(h)ai soiee ||1|| rahaau ||

Ignoring sexual desire, anger, greed and attachment, such a person becomes aware of the Lord's Feet. ||1||Pause||

ਰਜ ਗੁਣ ਤਮ ਗੁਣ ਸਤ ਗੁਣ ਕਹੀਐ ਇਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

raj gun tam gun sat gun kaheeaai ieh teree sabh maiaa ||

Raajas, the quality of energy and activity; Taamas, the quality of darkness and inertia; and Satvas, the quality of purity and light, are all called the creations of Maya, Your illusion.

ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਚੀਨੑੈ ਤਿਨੑ ਹੀ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

chauthe padh kau jo nar cheen(h)ai tin(h) hee param padh paiaa ||2||

That man who realizes the fourth state - he alone obtains the supreme state. ||2||

ਤੀਰਥ ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਕਾਮਾ ॥

teerath barat nem such sa(n)jam sadhaa rahai nihakaamaa ||

Amidst pilgrimages, fasting, rituals, purification and self-discipline, he remains always without thought of reward.

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਰੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਚੂਕਾ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮਾ ॥੩॥

tirasanaa ar maiaa bhram chookaa chitavat aatam raamaa ||3||

Thirst and desire for Maya and doubt depart, remembering the Lord, the Supreme Soul. ||3||

ਜਿਹ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਅੰਧਕਾਰੁ ਤਹ ਨਾਸਾ ॥

jeh ma(n)dhar dheepak paragaasiaa a(n)dhakaar teh naasaa ||

When the temple is illuminated by the lamp, its darkness is dispelled.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਨ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੪॥੧॥

nirabhau poor rahe bhram bhaagaa keh kabeer jan dhaasaa ||4||1||

The Fearless Lord is All-pervading. Doubt has run away, says Kabeer, the Lord's humble slave. ||4||1||

ਕਿਨਹੀ ਬਨਜਿਆ ਕਾਂਸੀ ਤਾਂਬਾ ਕਿਨਹੀ ਲਉਗ ਸੁਪਾਰੀ ॥

kinahee banajiaa kaa(n)see taa(n)baa kinahee laug supaaree ||

Some deal in bronze and copper, some in cloves and betel nuts.

ਸੰਤਹੁ ਬਨਜਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਕਾ ਐਸੀ ਖੇਪ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

sa(n)tahu banajiaa naam gobidh kaa aaisee khep hamaaree ||1||

The Saints deal in the Naam, the Name of the Lord of the Universe. Such is my merchandise as well. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਬਿਆਪਾਰੀ ॥

har ke naam ke biaapaaree ||

I am a trader in the Name of the Lord.

ਹੀਰਾ ਹਾਥਿ ਚੜਿਆ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕੁ ਛੂਟਿ ਗਈ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

heeraa haath chaRiaa niramolak chhooT giee sa(n)saaree ||1|| rahaau ||

The priceless diamond has come into my hands. I have left the world behind. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਚੇ ਲਾਏ ਤਉ ਸਚ ਲਾਗੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੀ ॥

saache laae tau sach laage saache ke biauhaaree ||

When the True Lord attached me, then I was attached to Truth. I am a trader of the True Lord.

ਸਾਚੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਕੇ ਭਾਰ ਚਲਾਏ ਪਹੁਚੇ ਜਾਇ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

saachee basat ke bhaar chalaae pahuche jai bha(n)ddaaree ||2||

I have loaded the commodity of Truth; It has reached the Lord, the Treasurer. ||2||

ਆਪਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਆਪੈ ਹੈ ਪਾਸਾਰੀ ॥

aapeh ratan javaahar maanik aapai hai paasaaree ||

He Himself is the pearl, the jewel, the ruby; He Himself is the jeweller.

ਆਪੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਆਪ ਚਲਾਵੈ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਆਪਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

aapai dheh dhis aap chalaavai nihachal hai biaapaaree ||3||

He Himself spreads out in the ten directions. The Merchant is Eternal and Unchanging. ||3||

ਮਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਬੈਲੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਪੈਡਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਗੋਨਿ ਭਰਿ ਡਾਰੀ ॥

man kar bail surat kar paiddaa giaan gon bhar ddaaree ||

My mind is the bull, and meditation is the road; I have filled my packs with spiritual wisdom, and loaded them on the bull.

ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਖੇਪ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੨॥

kahat kabeer sunahu re sa(n)tahu nibahee khep hamaaree ||4||2||

Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints: my merchandise has reached its destination! ||4||2||

ਰੀ ਕਲਵਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਰਿ ਮੂਢ ਮਤਿ ਉਲਟੋ ਪਵਨੁ ਫਿਰਾਵਉ ॥

ree kalavaar gavaar moodd mat ulaTo pavan firaavau ||

You barbaric brute, with your primitive intellect - reverse your breath and turn it inward.

ਮਨੁ ਮਤਵਾਰ ਮੇਰ ਸਰ ਭਾਠੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰ ਚੁਆਵਉ ॥੧॥

man matavaar mer sar bhaaThee a(n)mirat dhaar chuaavau ||1||

Let your mind be intoxicated with the stream of Ambrosial Nectar which trickles down from the furnace of the Tenth Gate. ||1||

ਬੋਲਹੁ ਭਈਆ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਦੁਹਾਈ ॥

bolahu bhieeaa raam kee dhuhaiee ||

O Siblings of Destiny, call on the Lord.

ਪੀਵਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਸਦਾ ਮਤਿ ਦੁਰਲਭ ਸਹਜੇ ਪਿਆਸ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

peevahu sa(n)t sadhaa mat dhuralabh sahaje piaas bujhaiee ||1|| rahaau ||

O Saints, drink in this wine forever; it is so difficult to obtain, and it quenches your thirst so easily. ||1||Pause||

ਭੈ ਬਿਚਿ ਭਾਉ ਭਾਇ ਕੋਊ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਾਈ ॥

bhai bich bhaau bhai kouoo boojheh har ras paavai bhaiee ||

In the Fear of God, is the Love of God. Only those few who understand His Love obtain the sublime essence of the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਜੇਤੇ ਘਟ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪੀਆਈ ॥੨॥

jete ghaT a(n)mrit sabh hee meh bhaavai tiseh peeaaiee ||2||

As many hearts as there are - in all of them, is His Ambrosial Nectar; as He pleases, He causes them to drink it in. ||2||

ਨਗਰੀ ਏਕੈ ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਬਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਈ ॥

nagaree ekai nau dharavaaje dhaavat baraj rahaiee ||

There are nine gates to the one city of the body; restrain your mind from escaping through them.

ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਛੂਟੈ ਦਸਵਾ ਦਰੁ ਖੂਲੑੈ ਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਖੀਵਾ ਭਾਈ ॥੩॥

tirakuTee chhooTai dhasavaa dhar khool(h)ai taa man kheevaa bhaiee ||3||

When the knot of the three qualities is untied, then the Tenth Gate opens up, and the mind is intoxicated, O Siblings of Destiny. ||3||

ਅਭੈ ਪਦ ਪੂਰਿ ਤਾਪ ਤਹ ਨਾਸੇ ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

abhai padh poor taap teh naase keh kabeer beechaaree ||

When the mortal fully realizes the state of fearless dignity, then his sufferings vanish; so says Kabeer after careful deliberation.

ਉਬਟ ਚਲੰਤੇ ਇਹੁ ਮਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੈਸੇ ਖੋਂਦ ਖੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੩॥

aubaT chala(n)te ih madh paiaa jaise kho(n)dh khumaaree ||4||3||

Turning away from the world, I have obtained this wine, and I am intoxicated with it. ||4||3||

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕੇ ਲੀਨੇ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਏਕੈ ਜਾਨੀ ॥

kaam karodh tirasanaa ke leene gat nahee ekai jaanee ||

ਫੂਟੀ ਆਖੈ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਬੂਡਿ ਮੂਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੧॥

fooTee aakhai kachhoo na soojhai boodd mooe bin paanee ||1||

Your eyes are blinded, and you see nothing at all. You drown and die without water. ||1||

ਚਲਤ ਕਤ ਟੇਢੇ ਟੇਢੇ ਟੇਢੇ ॥

chalat kat Tedde Tedde Tedde ||

ਅਸਤਿ ਚਰਮ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਮੂੰਦੇ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਹੀ ਕੇ ਬੇਢੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

asat charam bisaTaa ke moo(n)dhe dhuraga(n)dh hee ke bedde ||1|| rahaau ||

You are nothing more than a bundle of bones, wrapped in skin, filled with manure; you give off such a rotten smell! ||1||Pause||

ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੂਲੇ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਦੂਰੇ ॥

raam na japahu kavan bhram bhoole tum te kaal na dhoore ||

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਹੈ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪੂਰੇ ॥੨॥

anik jatan kar ih tan raakhahu rahai avasathaa poore ||2||

Making all sorts of efforts, you manage to preserve this body, but it shall only survive until its time is up. ||2||

ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥

aapan keeaa kachhoo na hovai kiaa ko karai paraanee ||

By one's own efforts, nothing is done. What can the mere mortal accomplish?

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥੩॥

jaa tis bhaavai satigur bheTai eko naam bakhaanee ||3||

When it pleases the Lord, the mortal meets the True Guru, and chants the Name of the One Lord. ||3||

ਬਲੂਆ ਕੇ ਘਰੂਆ ਮਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਫੁਲਵਤ ਦੇਹ ਅਇਆਨੇ ॥

balooaa ke gharooaa meh basate fulavat dheh iaane ||

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਿਹ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਬੂਡੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਨੇ ॥੪॥੪॥

kahu kabeer jeh raam na chetio boodde bahut siaane ||4||4||

Says Kabeer, those who do not remember the Lord may be very clever, but they still drown. ||4||4||

ਟੇਢੀ ਪਾਗ ਟੇਢੇ ਚਲੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਬੀਰੇ ਖਾਨ ॥

Teddee paag Tedde chale laage beere khaan ||

Your turban is crooked, and you walk crooked; and now you have started chewing betel leaves.

ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਕਾਜੁ ਨ ਕਛੂਐ ਮੇਰੋ ਕਾਮੁ ਦੀਵਾਨ ॥੧॥

bhaau bhagat siau kaaj na kachhooaai mero kaam dheevaan ||1||

You have no use at all for loving devotional worship; you say you have business in court. ||1||

ਰਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਹੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ ॥

raam bisaario hai abhimaan ||

In your egotistical pride, you have forgotten the Lord.

ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਮਹਾ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਮਾਨਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kanik kaamanee mahaa su(n)dharee pekh pekh sach maan ||1|| rahaau ||

Gazing upon your gold, and your very beautiful wife, you believe that they are permanent. ||1||Pause||

ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਹਾ ਮਦ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਅਉਧ ਬਿਹਾਨਿ ॥

laalach jhooTh bikaar mahaa madh ieh bidh aaudh bihaan ||

You are engrossed in greed, falsehood, corruption and great arrogance. Your life is passing away.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬੇਰ ਆਇ ਲਾਗੋ ਕਾਲੁ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੨॥੫॥

keh kabeer a(n)t kee ber aai laago kaal nidhaan ||2||5||

Says Kabeer, at the very last moment, death will come and seize you, you fool! ||2||5||

ਚਾਰਿ ਦਿਨ ਅਪਨੀ ਨਉਬਤਿ ਚਲੇ ਬਜਾਇ ॥

chaar dhin apanee naubat chale bajai ||

The mortal beats the drum for a few days, and then he must depart.

ਇਤਨਕੁ ਖਟੀਆ ਗਠੀਆ ਮਟੀਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਛੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

eitanak khaTeeaa gaTheeaa maTeeaa sa(n)g na kachh lai jai ||1|| rahaau ||

With so much wealth and cash and buried treasure, still, he cannot take anything with him. ||1||Pause||

ਦਿਹਰੀ ਬੈਠੀ ਮਿਹਰੀ ਰੋਵੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਲਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇ ॥

dhiharee baiThee miharee rovai dhuaarai lau sa(n)g mai ||

Sitting on the threshhold, his wife weeps and wails; his mother accompanies him to the outer gate.

ਮਰਹਟ ਲਗਿ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਹੰਸੁ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

marahaT lag sabh log kuTa(n)b mil ha(n)s ikelaa jai ||1||

All the people and relatives together go to the crematorium, but the swan-soul must go home all alone. ||1||

ਵੈ ਸੁਤ ਵੈ ਬਿਤ ਵੈ ਪੁਰ ਪਾਟਨ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਆਇ ॥

vai sut vai bit vai pur paaTan bahur na dhekhai aai ||

Those children, that wealth, that city and town - he shall not come to see them again.

ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਕੀ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥੬॥

kahat kabeer raam kee na simarahu janam akaarath jai ||2||6||

Says Kabeer, why do you not meditate on the Lord? Your life is uselessly slipping away! ||2||6||

ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਕੁਲ ਸੰਜੁਗਤੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

khaT karam kul sa(n)jugat hai har bhagat hiradhai naeh ||

One who performs the six religious rituals and comes from a good family, but who does not have devotion to the Lord in his heart,

ਚਰਨਾਰਬਿੰਦ ਨ ਕਥਾ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਪਚ ਤੁਲਿ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥੧॥

charanaarabi(n)dh na kathaa bhaavai supach tul samaan ||1||

one who does not appreciate talk of the Lord's Lotus Feet, is just like an outcaste, a pariah. ||1||

ਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਚੇਤਿ ਚੇਤ ਅਚੇਤ ॥

re chit chet chet achet ||

Be conscious, be conscious, be conscious, O my unconscious mind.

ਕਾਹੇ ਨ ਬਾਲਮੀਕਹਿ ਦੇਖ ॥

kaahe na baalameekeh dhekh ||

Why do you not look at Baalmeek?

ਕਿਸੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਤੇ ਕਿਹ ਪਦਹਿ ਅਮਰਿਓ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਸੇਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kis jaat te keh padheh amario raam bhagat bisekh ||1|| rahaau ||

From such a low social status, what a high status he obtained! Devotional worship to the Lord is sublime! ||1||Pause||

ਸੁਆਨ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਅਜਾਤੁ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰਿ੍ਰਸ੍ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ਹੇਤੁ ॥

suaan satr ajaat sabh te kirarasan laavai het ||

The killer of dogs, the lowest of all, was lovingly embraced by Krishna.

ਲੋਗੁ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਰਾਹੈ ਤੀਨਿ ਲੋਕ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ ॥੨॥

log bapuraa kiaa saraahai teen lok praves ||2||

See how the poor people praise him! His praise extends throughout the three worlds. ||2||

ਅਜਾਮਲੁ ਪਿੰਗੁਲਾ ਲੁਭਤੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਗਏ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

ajaamal pi(n)gulaa lubhat ku(n)char ge har kai paas ||

Ajaamal, Pingulaa, Lodhia and the elephant went to the Lord.

ਐਸੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਰੇ ਤੂ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਤਰਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ॥੩॥੧॥

aaise dhuramat nisatare too kiau na tareh ravidhaas ||3||1||

Even such evil-minded beings were emancipated. Why should you not also be saved, O Ravi Daas? ||3||1||
