ਕਹਾ ਨਰ ਗਰਬਸਿ ਥੋਰੀ ਬਾਤ ॥

kahaa nar garabas thoree baat ||

O mortal, why are you so proud of small things?

ਮਨ ਦਸ ਨਾਜੁ ਟਕਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਾਂਠੀ ਐਂਡੌ ਟੇਢੌ ਜਾਤੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

man dhas naaj Takaa chaar gaa(n)Thee aai(n)ddau Teddau jaat ||1|| rahaau ||

With a few pounds of grain and a few coins in your pocket, you are totally puffed up with pride. ||1||Pause||

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪੁ ਗਾਂਉ ਸਉ ਪਾਏ ਦੁਇ ਲਖ ਟਕਾ ਬਰਾਤ ॥

bahut prataap gaa(n)au sau paae dhui lakh Takaa baraat ||

With great pomp and ceremony, you control a hundred villages, with an income of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

ਦਿਵਸ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੀ ਜੈਸੇ ਬਨ ਹਰ ਪਾਤ ॥੧॥

dhivas chaar kee karahu saahibee jaise ban har paat ||1||

The power you exert will last for only a few days, like the green leaves of the forest. ||1||

ਨਾ ਕੋਊ ਲੈ ਆਇਓ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾ ਕੋਊ ਲੈ ਜਾਤੁ ॥

naa kouoo lai aaio ih dhan naa kouoo lai jaat ||

No one has brought this wealth with him, and no one will take it with him when he goes.

ਰਾਵਨ ਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਛਤ੍ਰਪਤਿ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਗਏ ਬਿਲਾਤ ॥੨॥

raavan hoo(n) te adhik chhatrapat khin meh ge bilaat ||2||

Emperors, even greater than Raawan, passed away in an instant. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਪੂਜਹੁ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਤ ॥

har ke sa(n)t sadhaa thir poojahu jo har naam japaat ||

The Lord's Saints are steady and stable forever; they worship and adore Him, and chant the Lord's Name.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਤ ਹੈ ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਤੇ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਤ ॥੩॥

jin kau kirapaa karat hai gobidh te satasa(n)g milaat ||3||

Those who are mercifully blessed by the Lord of the Universe, join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. ||3||

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਨ ਚਲਤ ਸੰਗਾਤ ॥

maat pitaa banitaa sut sa(n)pat a(n)t na chalat sa(n)gaat ||

Mother, father, spouse, children and wealth will not go along with you in the end.

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਰਾਮ ਭਜੁ ਬਉਰੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥ ਜਾਤ ॥੪॥੧॥

kahat kabeer raam bhaj baure janam akaarath jaat ||4||1||

Says Kabeer, meditate and vibrate on the Lord, O madman. Your life is uselessly wasting away. ||4||1||

ਰਾਜਾਸ੍ਰਮ ਮਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਤੇਰੀ ॥

raajaasram mit nahee jaanee teree ||

I do not know the limits of Your Royal Ashram.

ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਹਉ ਚੇਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

tere sa(n)tan kee hau cheree ||1|| rahaau ||

I am the humble slave of Your Saints. ||1||Pause||

ਹਸਤੋ ਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਰੋਵਤੁ ਆਵੈ ਰੋਵਤੁ ਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਹਸੈ ॥

hasato jai su rovat aavai rovat jai su hasai ||

The one who goes laughing returns crying, and the one who goes crying returns laughing.

ਬਸਤੋ ਹੋਇ ਹੋਇ ਸੋੁ ਊਜਰੁ ਊਜਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਬਸੈ ॥੧॥

basato hoi hoi suo uoojar uoojar hoi su basai ||1||

What is inhabited becomes deserted, and what is deserted becomes inhabited. ||1||

ਜਲ ਤੇ ਥਲ ਕਰਿ ਥਲ ਤੇ ਕੂਆ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥

jal te thal kar thal te kooaa koop te mer karaavai ||

The water turns into a desert, the desert turns into a well, and the well turns into a mountain.

ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਚਢਾਵੈ ਚਢੇ ਅਕਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

dharatee te aakaas chaddaavai chadde akaas giraavai ||2||

From the earth, the mortal is exalted to the Akaashic ethers; and from the ethers on high, he is thrown down again. ||2||

ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਰਾਜੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਤੇ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ॥

bhekhaaree te raaj karaavai raajaa te bhekhaaree ||

The beggar is transformed into a king, and the king into a beggar.

ਖਲ ਮੂਰਖ ਤੇ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਰਿਬੋ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਤੇ ਮੁਗਧਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

khal moorakh te pa(n)ddit karibo pa(n)ddit te mugadhaaree ||3||

The idiotic fool is transformed into a Pandit, a religious scholar, and the Pandit into a fool. ||3||

ਨਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਪੁਰਖਨ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

naaree te jo purakh karaavai purakhan te jo naaree ||

The woman is transformed into a man, and the men into women.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੨॥

kahu kabeer saadhoo ko preetam tis moorat balihaaree ||4||2||

Says Kabeer, God is the Beloved of the Holy Saints. I am a sacrifice to His image. ||4||2||

ਕਾਏਂ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

kaae(n) re man bikhiaa ban jai ||

O mortal, why are you going into the forest of corruption?

ਭੂਲੌ ਰੇ ਠਗਮੂਰੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

bhoolau re Thagamooree khai ||1|| rahaau ||

You have been misled into eating the toxic drug. ||1||Pause||

ਜੈਸੇ ਮੀਨੁ ਪਾਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ॥

jaise meen paanee meh rahai ||

You are like a fish living in the water;

ਕਾਲ ਜਾਲ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਲਹੈ ॥

kaal jaal kee sudh nahee lahai ||

you do not see the net of death.

ਜਿਹਬਾ ਸੁਆਦੀ ਲੀਲਿਤ ਲੋਹ ॥

jihabaa suaadhee leelit loh ||

Trying to taste the flavor, you swallow the hook.

ਐਸੇ ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਮੋਹ ॥੧॥

aaise kanik kaamanee baadhio moh ||1||

You are bound by attachment to wealth and woman. ||1||

ਜਿਉ ਮਧੁ ਮਾਖੀ ਸੰਚੈ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

jiau madh maakhee sa(n)chai apaar ||

The bee stores up loads of honey;

ਮਧੁ ਲੀਨੋ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥

madh leeno mukh dheenee chhaar ||

then someone comes and takes the honey, and throws dust in its mouth.

ਗਊ ਬਾਛ ਕਉ ਸੰਚੈ ਖੀਰੁ ॥

guoo baachh kau sa(n)chai kheer ||

The cow stores up loads of milk;

ਗਲਾ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਦੁਹਿ ਲੇਇ ਅਹੀਰੁ ॥੨॥

galaa baa(n)dh dhuh lei aheer ||2||

then the milkman comes and ties it by its neck and milks it. ||2||

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਕਰੈ ॥

maiaa kaaran sram at karai ||

For the sake of Maya, the mortal works very hard.

ਸੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੈ ਗਾਡੈ ਧਰੈ ॥

so maiaa lai gaaddai dharai ||

He takes the wealth of Maya, and buries it in the ground.

ਅਤਿ ਸੰਚੈ ਸਮਝੈ ਨਹੀ ਮੂੜੑ ॥

at sa(n)chai samajhai nahee mooR(h) ||

He acquires so much, but the fool does not appreciate it.

ਧਨੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਗਇਓ ਧੂੜਿ ॥੩॥

dhan dharatee tan hoi gio dhooR ||3||

His wealth remains buried in the ground, while his body turns to dust. ||3||

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਤਿ ਜਰੈ ॥

kaam karodh tirasanaa at jarai ||

He burns in tremendous sexual desire, unresolved anger and desire.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਬਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੈ ॥

saadhasa(n)gat kabahoo nahee karai ||

He never joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਕਹਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਤਾ ਚੀ ਆਣਿ ॥

kahat naamadheau taa chee aan ||

Says Naam Dayv, seek God's Shelter;

ਨਿਰਭੈ ਹੋਇ ਭਜੀਐ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੪॥੧॥

nirabhai hoi bhajeeaai bhagavaan ||4||1||

be fearless, and vibrate on the Lord God. ||4||1||

ਬਦਹੁ ਕੀ ਨ ਹੋਡ ਮਾਧਉ ਮੋ ਸਿਉ ॥

badhahu kee na hodd maadhau mo siau ||

Why not make a bet with me, O Lord of Wealth?

ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੇ ਜਨੁ ਜਨ ਤੇ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਪਰਿਓ ਹੈ ਤੋ ਸਿਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Thaakur te jan jan te Thaakur khel pario hai to siau ||1|| rahaau ||

From the master comes the servant, and from the servant, comes the master. This is the game I play with You. ||1||Pause||

ਆਪਨ ਦੇਉ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਲਗਾਵੈ ਪੂਜਾ ॥

aapan dheau dhehuraa aapan aap lagaavai poojaa ||

You Yourself are the deity, and You are the temple of worship. You are the devoted worshipper.

ਜਲ ਤੇ ਤਰੰਗ ਤਰੰਗ ਤੇ ਹੈ ਜਲੁ ਕਹਨ ਸੁਨਨ ਕਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥

jal te tara(n)g tara(n)g te hai jal kahan sunan kau dhoojaa ||1||

From the water, the waves rise up, and from the waves, the water. They are only different by figures of speech. ||1||

ਆਪਹਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਆਪਹਿ ਨਾਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਬਜਾਵੈ ਤੂਰਾ ॥

aapeh gaavai aapeh naachai aap bajaavai tooraa ||

You Yourself sing, and You Yourself dance. You Yourself blow the bugle.

ਕਹਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਜਨੁ ਊਰਾ ਤੂ ਪੂਰਾ ॥੨॥੨॥

kahat naamadheau too(n) mero Thaakur jan uooraa too pooraa ||2||2||

Says Naam Dayv, You are my Lord and Master. Your humble servant is imperfect; You are perfect. ||2||2||

ਦਾਸ ਅਨਿੰਨ ਮੇਰੋ ਨਿਜ ਰੂਪ ॥

dhaas ani(n)n mero nij roop ||

Says God: my slave is devoted only to me; he is in my very image.

ਦਰਸਨ ਨਿਮਖ ਤਾਪ ਤ੍ਰਈ ਮੋਚਨ ਪਰਸਤ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਤ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੂਪ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

dharasan nimakh taap triee mochan parasat mukat karat gireh koop ||1|| rahaau ||

The sight of him, even for an instant, cures the three fevers; his touch brings liberation from the deep dark pit of household affairs. ||1||Pause||

ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਂਧੀ ਭਗਤੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਭਗਤੁ ਨ ਛੂਟੈ ਮੋਹਿ ॥

meree baa(n)dhee bhagat chhaddaavai baa(n)dhai bhagat na chhooTai moh ||

The devotee can release anyone from my bondage, but I cannot release anyone from his.

ਏਕ ਸਮੈ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਗਹਿ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਤਉ ਫੁਨਿ ਮੋ ਪੈ ਜਬਾਬੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

ek samai mo kau geh baa(n)dhai tau fun mo pai jabaab na hoi ||1||

If, at any time, he grabs and binds me, even then, I cannot protest. ||1||

ਮੈ ਗੁਨ ਬੰਧ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਜੀਵਨਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜੀਵਨਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ॥

mai gun ba(n)dh sagal kee jeevan meree jeevan mere dhaas ||

I am bound by virtue; I am the Life of all. My slaves are my very life.

ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਐਸੀ ਤੈਸੋ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥੨॥੩॥

naamadhev jaa ke jeea aaisee taiso taa kai prem pragaas ||2||3||

Says Naam Dayv, as is the quality of his soul, so is my love which illuminates him. ||2||3||

ਤੈ ਨਰ ਕਿਆ ਪੁਰਾਨੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੀਨਾ ॥

tai nar kiaa puraan sun keenaa ||

So what have you accomplished by listening to the Puraanas?

ਅਨਪਾਵਨੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਉਪਜੀ ਭੂਖੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਨ ਦੀਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

anapaavanee bhagat nahee upajee bhookhai dhaan na dheenaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Faithful devotion has not welled up within you, and you have not been inspired to give to the hungry. ||1||Pause||

ਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਬਿਸਰਿਓ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਨ ਬਿਸਰਿਓ ਲੋਭੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਿਓ ਦੇਵਾ ॥

kaam na bisario karodh na bisario lobh na chhooTio dhevaa ||

You have not forgotten sexual desire, and you have not forgotten anger; greed has not left you either.

ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਛੂਟੀ ਨਿਫਲ ਭਈ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੧॥

par ni(n)dhaa mukh te nahee chhooTee nifal bhiee sabh sevaa ||1||

Your mouth has not stopped slandering and gossiping about others. Your service is useless and fruitless. ||1||

ਬਾਟ ਪਾਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਮੂਸਿ ਬਿਰਾਨੋ ਪੇਟੁ ਭਰੈ ਅਪ੍ਰਾਧੀ ॥

baaT paar ghar moos biraano peT bharai apraadhee ||

By breaking into the houses of others and robbing them, you fill your belly, you sinner.

ਜਿਹਿ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਜਾਇ ਅਪਕੀਰਤਿ ਸੋਈ ਅਬਿਦਿਆ ਸਾਧੀ ॥੨॥

jeh paralok jai apakeerat soiee abidhiaa saadhee ||2||

But when you go to the world beyond, your guilt will be well known, by the acts of ignorance which you committed. ||2||

ਹਿੰਸਾ ਤਉ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਛੂਟੀ ਜੀਅ ਦਇਆ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਲੀ ॥

hi(n)saa tau man te nahee chhooTee jeea dhiaa nahee paalee ||

Cruelty has not left your mind; you have not cherished kindness for other living beings.

ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਥਾ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਨ ਚਾਲੀ ॥੩॥੧॥੬॥

paramaana(n)dh saadhasa(n)gat mil kathaa puneet na chaalee ||3||1||6||

Parmaanand has joined the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. Why have you not followed the sacred teachings? ||3||1||6||

ਛਾਡਿ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਮੁਖਨ ਕੋ ਸੰਗੁ ॥

chhaadd man har bimukhan ko sa(n)g ||

O mind, do not even associate with those who have turned their backs on the Lord.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਬਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਲੋਕ ॥

har ke sa(n)g base har lok ||

The people of the Lord dwell with the Lord.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਸਰਬਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਅਰਪਿਓ ਅਨਦ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਝੋਕ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

tan man arap sarabas sabh arapio anadh sahaj dhun jhok ||1|| rahaau ||

They dedicate their minds and bodies to Him; they dedicate everything to Him. They are intoxicated with the celestial melody of intuitive ecstasy. ||1||Pause||

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰਬਿਖਈ ਪਾਏ ਹੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਥੋਕ ॥

dharasan pekh bhe nirabikhiee paae hai sagale thok ||

Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, they are cleansed of corruption. They obtain absolutely everything.

ਆਨ ਬਸਤੁ ਸਿਉ ਕਾਜੁ ਨ ਕਛੂਐ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਦਨ ਅਲੋਕ ॥੧॥

aan basat siau kaaj na kachhooaai su(n)dhar badhan alok ||1||

They have nothing to do with anything else; they gaze on the beauteous Face of God. ||1||

ਸਿਆਮ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਤਜਿ ਆਨ ਜੁ ਚਾਹਤ ਜਿਉ ਕੁਸਟੀ ਤਨਿ ਜੋਕ ॥

siaam su(n)dhar taj aan ju chaahat jiau kusaTee tan jok ||

But one who forsakes the elegantly beautiful Lord, and harbors desire for anything else, is like a leech on the body of a leper.

ਸੂਰਦਾਸ ਮਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਹਥਿ ਲੀਨੋ ਦੀਨੋ ਇਹੁ ਪਰਲੋਕ ॥੨॥੧॥੮॥

sooradhaas man prabh hath leeno dheeno ih paralok ||2||1||8||

Says Sur Daas, God has taken my mind in His Hands. He has blessed me with the world beyond. ||2||1||8||

Other than the Lord, who is the Help and Support of the mind?

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਹਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਸਭ ਫਨ ਕਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

maat pitaa bhaiee sut banitaa hit laago sabh fan kaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Love and attachment to mother, father, sibling, child and spouse, is all just an illusion. ||1||Pause||

ਆਗੇ ਕਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਬਾਂਧਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਭਰਵਾਸਾ ਧਨ ਕਾ ॥

aage kau kichh tulahaa baa(n)dhahu kiaa bharavaasaa dhan kaa ||

So build a raft to the world hereafter; what faith do you place in wealth?

ਕਹਾ ਬਿਸਾਸਾ ਇਸ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਕਾ ਇਤਨਕੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਠਨਕਾ ॥੧॥

kahaa bisaasaa is bhaa(n)dde kaa itanak laagai Thanakaa ||1||

What confidence do you place in this fragile vessel; it breaks with the slightest stroke. ||1||

ਸਗਲ ਧਰਮ ਪੁੰਨ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਧੂਰਿ ਬਾਂਛਹੁ ਸਭ ਜਨ ਕਾ ॥

sagal dharam pu(n)n fal paavahu dhoor baa(n)chhahu sabh jan kaa ||

You shall obtain the rewards of all righteousness and goodness, if you desire to be the dust of all.

ਕਹੈ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਉਡਨ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ ਬਨ ਕਾ ॥੨॥੧॥੯॥

kahai kabeer sunahu re sa(n)tahu ih man uddan pa(n)kheroo ban kaa ||2||1||9||
