He preserved the mind in the fire of the womb;

vaajai pavan aakhai sabh jai ||2||

at His Command, the wind blows everywhere. ||2||

jetaa moh pareet suaadh ||

These worldly attachments, loves and pleasurable tastes,

all are just black stains.

dhaag dhos muh chaliaa lai ||

dharageh baisan naahee jai ||3||

shall find no place to sit in the Court of the Lord. ||3||

karam milai aakhan teraa naau ||

By Your Grace, we chant Your Name.

Even if one is drowning, still, he may be saved.

je badhee kare taa tasoo na chheejai ||

If a thief curses him, no damage is done.

chor kee haamaa bhare na koi ||

No one will take responsibility for a thief.

chor keeaa cha(n)gaa kiau hoi ||1||

How can a thief's actions be good? ||1||

sun man a(n)dhe kute kooRiaar ||

Listen, O mind, you blind, false dog!

Even without your speaking, the Lord knows and understands. ||1||Pause||

chor suaaliau chor siaanaa ||

A thief may be handsome, and a thief may be wise,

khoTe kaa mul ek dhugaanaa ||

but he is still just a counterfeit coin, worth only a shell.

je saath rakheeaai dheejai ralai ||

If it is kept and mixed with other coins,

jaa parakheeaai khoTaa hoi jai ||2||

it will be found to be false, when the coins are inspected. ||2||

jaisaa kare su taisaa paavai ||

As one acts, so does he receive.

aap beej aape hee khaavai ||

As he plants, so does he eat.

je vaddiaaieeaa aape khai ||

He may praise himself gloriously,

jehee surat tehai raeh jai ||3||

but still, according to his understanding, so is the path he must follow. ||3||

je sau kooReeaa kooR kabaaR ||

He may tell hundreds of lies to conceal his falsehood,

bhaavai sabh aakhau sa(n)saar ||

and all the world may call him good.

tudh bhaavai adhee paravaan ||

If it pleases You, Lord, even the foolish are approved.

The body is the paper, and the mind is the inscription written upon it.

sir ke lekh na paRai iaanaa ||

The ignorant fool does not read what is written on his forehead.

dharageh ghaRe'eh teene lekh ||

In the Court of the Lord, three inscriptions are recorded.

khoTaa kaam na aavai vekh ||1||

Behold, the counterfeit coin is worthless there. ||1||

O Nanak, if there is silver in it,
