jaitasaree mahalaa chauthhaa ghar pehilaa chaupadhe

Jaitsree, Fourth Mehla, First House, Chau-Padhay:

ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

merai heearai ratan naam har basiaa gur haath dhario merai maathaa ||

The Jewel of the Lord's Name abides within my heart; the Guru has placed His hand on my forehead.

janam janam ke kilabikh dhukh utare gur naam dheeo rin laathaa ||1||

The sins and pains of countless incarnations have been cast out. The Guru has blessed me with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and my debt has been paid off. ||1||

mere man bhaj raam naam sabh arathaa ||

O my mind, vibrate the Lord's Name, and all your affairs shall be resolved.

gur poorai har naam dhiraRaiaa bin naavai jeevan birathaa || rahaau ||

The Perfect Guru has implanted the Lord's Name within me; without the Name, life is useless. ||Pause||

bin gur mooR bhe hai manmukh te moh maiaa nit faathaa ||

Without the Guru, the self-willed manmukhs are foolish and ignorant; they are forever entangled in emotional attachment to Maya.

tin saadhoo charan na seve kabahoo tin sabh janam akaathaa ||2||

They never serve the feet of the Holy; their lives are totally useless. ||2||

jin saadhoo charan saadh pag seve tin safalio janam sanaathaa ||

Those who serve at the feet of the Holy, the feet of the Holy, their lives are made fruitful, and they belong to the Lord.

mo kau keejai dhaas dhaas dhaasan ko har dhiaa dhaar jaga(n)naathaa ||3||

Make me the slave of the slave of the slaves of the Lord; bless me with Your Mercy, O Lord of the Universe. ||3||

ham a(n)dhule giaanaheen agiaanee kiau chaaleh maarag pa(n)thaa ||

I am blind, ignorant and totally without wisdom; how can I walk on the Path?

ham a(n)dhule kau gur a(n)chal dheejai jan naanak chaleh mila(n)thaa ||4||1||

I am blind - O Guru, please let me grasp the hem of Your robe, so that servant Nanak may walk in harmony with You. ||4||1||

End of the Hukamnama

Past seven days

What is a Hukamnama?

Each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, after Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened with prayer, the Granthi reads the shabad at the top of the left page the Guru opens to. That shabad is the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day. The word joins hukam, an order, and nama, a letter.

It is taken once and shared everywhere, so a Sikh in Amritsar and one in California read the same shabad that day. Many Sikhs read it after their morning Nitnem, or listen to it on the way to work, and carry a line of it through the day.

This page shows the day's Hukamnama in Gurmukhi with a transliteration and English translation, and the recording of it when one is available. The Simran app brings it to your phone each morning, with the lock screen widget showing the first line where you will see it first.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the Hukamnama taken?

It is taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib early in the morning, India time, and appears here soon after. India is twelve and a half hours ahead of California and five and a half hours ahead of London, so by the clock in North America the new Hukamnama usually arrives the evening before.

Why does the date look a day ahead of mine?

The date is the day in Amritsar, where the Hukamnama is taken. When it is Tuesday morning there it is still Monday evening in most of the Americas.

Can I read an earlier Hukamnama?

The past seven days are listed above. Each opens that day's full shabad in Gurmukhi with transliteration and English.

How do I get the Hukamnama on my lock screen?

The Simran app has a Daily Hukamnama widget for the lock screen on iPhone and Android. Add it once and the day's shabad is there each morning. The lock screen widget page walks through the setup.
