ਕਵਨ ਗੁਨੁ ਜੋ ਤੁਝੁ ਲੈ ਗਾਵਉ ॥

kavan gun jo tujh lai gaavau ||

What is that virtue, by which I may sing of You?

ਕਵਨ ਬੋਲ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਰੀਝਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kavan bol paarabraham reejhaavau ||1|| rahaau ||

What is that speech, by which I may please the Supreme Lord God? ||1||Pause||

ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਪੂਜਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਰਉ ॥

kavan su poojaa teree karau ||

What worship service shall I perform for You?

ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਰਉ ॥੨॥

kavan su bidh jit bhavajal tarau ||2||

How can I cross over the terrifying world-ocean? ||2||

ਕਵਨ ਤਪੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਪੀਆ ਹੋਇ ॥

kavan tap jit tapeeaa hoi ||

What is that penance, by which I may become a penitent?

ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੩॥

kavanu su naam haumai mal khoi ||3||

What is that Name, by which the filth of egotism may be washed away? ||3||

ਗੁਣ ਪੂਜਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲ ਘਾਲ ॥

gun poojaa giaan dhiaan naanak sagal ghaal ||

Virtue, worship, spiritual wisdom, meditation and all service, O Nanak,

ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੪॥

jis kar kirapaa satigur milai dhiaal ||4||

are obtained from the True Guru, when, in His Mercy and Kindness, He meets us. ||4||

ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਗੁਨੁ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

tis hee gun tin hee prabh jaataa ||

They alone receive this merit, and they alone know God,

ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਮਾਨਿ ਲੇਇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੩੬॥੧੦੫॥

jis kee maan lei sukhadhaataa ||1|| rahaau dhoojaa ||36||105||

who are approved by the Giver of peace. ||1||Second Pause||36||105||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

gauRee mahalaa panjavaa ||

Gauree, Fifth Mehla:

ਆਪਨ ਤਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਗਰਬਾ ॥

aapan tan nahee jaa ko garabaa ||

The body which you are so proud of, does not belong to you.

ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਖ ਨਹੀ ਆਪਨ ਦਰਬਾ ॥੧॥

raaj milakh nahee aapan dharabaa ||1||

Power, property and wealth are not yours. ||1||

ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਲਪਟਾਇਓ ॥

aapan nahee kaa kau lapaTaio ||

They are not yours, so why do you cling to them?

ਆਪਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

aapan naam satigur te paio ||1|| rahaau ||

Only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is yours; it is received from the True Guru. ||1||Pause||

ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥

sut banitaa aapan nahee bhaiee ||

Children, spouse and siblings are not yours.

ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਆਪ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥

eisaT meet aap baap na maiee ||2||

Dear friends, mother and father are not yours. ||2||

ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਮ ॥

suinaa roopaa fun nahee dhaam ||

Gold, silver and money are not yours.

ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਮ ॥੩॥

haivar gaivar aapan nahee kaam ||3||

Fine horses and magnificent elephants are of no use to you. ||3||

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥

kahu naanak jo gur bakhas milaiaa ||

Says Nanak, those whom the Guru forgives, meet with the Lord.

ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੩੭॥੧੦੬॥

tis kaa sabh kichh jis kaa har raiaa ||4||37||106||

Everything belongs to those who have the Lord as their King. ||4||37||106||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

gauRee mahalaa panjavaa ||

Gauree, Fifth Mehla:

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਊਪਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਥੇ ॥

gur ke charan uoopar mere maathe ||

I place the Guru's Feet on my forehead,

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਲਾਥੇ ॥੧॥

taa te dhukh mere sagale laathe ||1||

and all my pains are gone. ||1||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ॥

satigur apune kau kurabaanee ||

I am a sacrifice to my True Guru.

ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਮ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

aatam cheen param ra(n)g maanee ||1|| rahaau ||

I have come to understand my soul, and I enjoy supreme bliss. ||1||Pause||

ਚਰਣ ਰੇਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੀ ॥

charan ren gur kee mukh laagee ||

I have applied the dust of the Guru's Feet to my face,

ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥੨॥

aha(n)budh tin sagal tiaagee ||2||

which has removed all my arrogant intellect. ||2||

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਲਗੋ ਮਨਿ ਮੀਠਾ ॥

gur kaa sabadh lago man meeThaa ||

The Word of the Guru's Shabad has become sweet to my mind,

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੩॥

paarabraham taa te moh ddeeThaa ||3||

and I behold the Supreme Lord God. ||3||

ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

gur sukhadhaataa gur karataar ||

The Guru is the Giver of peace; the Guru is the Creator.

ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੩੮॥੧੦੭॥

jeea praan naanak gur aadhaar ||4||38||107||

O Nanak, the Guru is the Support of the breath of life and the soul. ||4||38||107||

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਆਹਿ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਊਣਾ ਕਛਹੂ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

re man mere too(n) taa kau aaeh || jaa kai uoonaa kachhahoo naeh ||1||

O my mind, seek the One who lacks nothing. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੀਤ ॥

har saa preetam kar man meet ||

Make the Beloved Lord your friend.

ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਦ ਚੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

praan adhaar raakhahu sadh cheet ||1|| rahaau ||

Keep Him constantly in your mind; He is the Support of the breath of life. ||1||Pause||

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਸੇਵਿ ॥

re man mere too(n) taa kau sev ||

O my mind, serve Him;

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਦੇਵ ॥੨॥

aadh purakh apara(n)par dhev ||2||

He is the Primal Being, the Infinite Divine Lord. ||2||

ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨ ਕਰਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਸਾ ॥

tis uoopar man kar too(n) aasaa ||

Place your hopes in the One

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਭਰਵਾਸਾ ॥੩॥

aadh jugaadh jaa kaa bharavaasaa ||3||

who is the Support of all beings, from the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages. ||3||

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

jaa kee preet sadhaa sukh hoi ||

His Love brings eternal peace;

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੩੯॥੧੦੮॥

naanak gaavai gur mil soi ||4||39||108||

meeting the Guru, Nanak sings His Glorious Praises. ||4||39||108||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Gauree, Fifth Mehla:

ਮੀਤੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਹਮ ਮਾਨਾ ॥

meet karai soiee ham maanaa ||

Whatever my Friend does, I accept.

ਮੀਤ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਬ ਕੁਸਲ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੧॥

meet ke karatab kusal samaanaa ||1||

My Friend's actions are pleasing to me. ||1||

ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤ ॥

ekaa Tek merai man cheet ||

Within my conscious mind, the One Lord is my only Support.

ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੁ ਹਮਰਾ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jis kichh karanaa su hamaraa meet ||1|| rahaau ||

One who does this is my Friend. ||1||Pause||

ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥

meet hamaaraa veparavaahaa ||

My Friend is Carefree.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਸਨਾਹਾ ॥੨॥

gur kirapaa te moh asanaahaa ||2||

By Guru's Grace, I give my love to Him. ||2||

ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥

meet hamaaraa a(n)tarajaamee ||

My Friend is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

ਸਮਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੩॥

samarath purakh paarabraham suaamee ||3||

He is the All-powerful Being, the Supreme Lord and Master. ||3||

ਹਮ ਦਾਸੇ ਤੁਮ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

ham dhaase tum Thaakur mere ||

I am Your servant; You are my Lord and Master.
